- Make a list of all marital and separate real and personal property, together with their approximate values.
- Prepare a financial information package that includes, but is not limited to, bank statements, securities account information, credit card statements, loan paperwork, real estate transactions, and so on.
- Make a list of all the things you do with your children.
- Make a budget for your monthly spending and those of your children.
- Before consulting with an attorney, determine your own critical needs, interests, and priorities.
WHAT TO STAY AWAY FROM DURING A DIVORCE
- Keep your children out of the divorce proceedings.
- Avoid arguing with your partner.
- If at all possible, avoid arguing in front of your children.
- Do not mention anything unpleasant about your spouse to your children or anybody else within hearing distance of your children.
- Try not to get unduly emotional about your divorce or your life after divorce in front of your children.
- You run the danger of exacerbating their uneasiness and worry of the future.
- Deny your husband access to the children unless there is a compelling cause to do so (for example, domestic violence, abuse, etc.), and then only on the advice of counsel.
- Change the locks on the house only if instructed to do so by your lawyer.
